Red-necked Amazon: A Video from the Aftermath

The following video of a rescued Jackot parrot post-Maria has been shared thousands of times on Facebook over the past few days, courtesy of Dominica resident Denus Williams. As I learn more about the story, I will report back here. Thanks to Denus for caring for the bird in this time of crisis!

Possible Sisserou Pair: An Update from Dominica

Thanks again to Nikki Chandler Couture for sharing her latest Dominica parrot update– a photo taken by her husband near Sultan Falls on the island. Nikki writes:

They come in the morning and just before dusk every single day. The Jacos have always done so but my caretaker says a pair of Sisserous has been there 3 times. We have a very small grove of grapefruit that they eat from and have been doing long before we bought our estate.

While many Jacos have been spotted since Maria ravaged Dominica on the night of September 18, only one Sisserou has been positively identified in the aftermath. But where there’s one, there’s the possibility of more! Thanks for the intriguing updates, Nikki!

 

Jackot or Sisserou: New Photos from Dominica

Many thanks to Nikki Chandler Couture for giving me permission to share her photos here, originally posted today on the Updates– Aftermath of Hurricane Maria Facebook page. Her caption: ” Taken yesterday. Parrots at our Dominican home. My husband reports 4 traveling together. He said they are eating grapefruit on the ground and there is plenty. I’m making him buy more anyway.”

Take a close look. Jackot or Sisserou? To my eye, there’s something Sisserou-ish about the above lone silhouette, perched on high. No way to tell for sure though.
